HuoYan Shan (Flaming Mountains), an intensely hot area of the desert in the Turpan basin in Xinjiang that has hills made of red clay that appears to burning. It is the hottest place in China with temperatures reaching 47C (117F). Folklore purports that the red color of the mountain is the blood of a slain dragon that ate children.
